Hey everyone, my name is Abbie Finn and I hope you like my video 😊 It features my jazz trio playing part of an original composition of mine from my album ‘On Pink Lane’ which celebrates the iconic street in Newcastle, UK where we first played together at a jam session. My group is called the Abbie Finn Trio and this tune is from ‘So It’s True’.
I’ve been playing drums for 17 years now and have had many influences including my previous 1-1 mentor Sebastiaan De Krom and other amazing drummers such as Max Roach, Art Blakey, Tony Williams, Neil Peart and many more. I first got in drumming simply because I thought it was the coolest instrument in the band…I still think I’m right 😊 I went on to study at Leeds College of Music (now Leeds Conservatoire) and Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London.
I am very much into writing and performing jazz music and Eddie Myer from the Jazzwise Magazine recently said this about my playing on a review of the new album – ‘Her crisply, energetically accurate drumming drives each track forward with irresistible momentum’, and my debut album was described as ‘Exceptional British Jazz’ by Chris Philips of Jazz FM. I have recently performed across the UK at venues such as Jazz at the Lescar Sheffield, The Cockpit London, Jazz Café Posk London, Band on the Wall Manchester, Newcastle Jazz Festival, Manchester Jazz Festival, Hexham Jazz Festival and more.
In the past I have performed on London’s West End as part of the prestigious Pinter at the Pinter season as an on-stage drummer and actor and more recently on the debut musical theatre tour of Fantastically Great Women Who Changed The World, which celebrates the lives of many inspirational women including Marie Curie, Rosa Parks, Emmeline Pankhurst and more. It was really great to explore and find out more about the lives of these women and learn of their achievements. I’ve also worked with the lovely people at Women in Jazz Media and played on a gig they did late last year and was interviewed by Fiona Ross for her 10 questions and Migdalia Van Der Hoven’s ‘Sticks and Thrones’ podcast for drummers. This is part of my ‘impact’, spreading the word about female musicians and encouraging new players to take music to the next level. I also teach drum lessons too.
I really hope you all enjoy my playing on this trio track, stay funky and support female drummers! Please checkout Abbiefinn.com to see some more of my playing and projects that I’m involved with.
Brilliant and understated. Hexham here you come.
