Hi I’m Christine and this is my first year to enter HLAG. I’m just a hobby drummer – I first picked up sticks in March 2021. While I’ve only played in my basement thus far, playing in a band and playing live sounds like a fun future goal! My goal this year was to feel comfortable enough with my drumming to film a video and submit it. So here we go…
My drumming journey started when I went to clean up my basement and saw my husband’s old Roland TD-17 and thought, well, someone should play this…. At the time, my favorite song was Dynamite by BTS, so I searched on YouTube and found someone who played a cover of Dynamite that sounded similar to the original. I basically followed the drummer and copied where on the drum set he was hitting and since I wanted to know the song “note for note”, I ended up teaching myself how to read drum scores.
Recently, I completed a three month mentorship with two professional touring drummers: Richie Martinez, drummer for Arch Echo and Gabe Helguera, drummer for iPrevail. One of the final lessons was learning how to create my own drum parts. I like playing pop music and since most of today’s current pop music has computerized beats, I’ve been enjoying the challenge of interpreting the computerized version and figuring out how I would like the beats to sound on my acoustic set. The song I chose for my entry is an example of this and I really had fun coming up with my own version of this song. Hope you enjoy it – I have a lot of fun playing it!
How brave and talented of you to created your own drum version of a favorite song. Your rhythm is spot on and I hope you continue on your drum journey. I’ve heard Drumeo has good on-line lessons, although was fortunate enough for 12 years to have a music/drum teacher. Since the pandemic, I haven’t had his instruction, so trying to find another top notch instructor. Good Luck!
Good Luck to you, too, Diane! And good luck in finding another instructor that you love – although, I saw your entry and I don’t think you need an instructor! :—). Thank you for the kind words. My goal this year was to have the courage and confidence to actually film a video and submit – so I appreciate your encouragement & support!
It’s wonderful that you taught yourself, innovated on the kit, and also pursued more lessons with terrific mentors. Congratulations!!
Thank you for watching my video, Nadine 🙂 and Congratulations to you too – your entry was fun to watch!
