I’m Angela from Singapore and I am 44 years old.
My drumming journey started in 2008 when my husband and I bought our first electronic kit on a whim. I had the sole intention to vent my anger and sadness on it after our first pregnancy ended in a miscarriage. My husband taught me my first drum beats. I never wished for anybody else to see or hear me play. Pounding the drums in private was for my own happiness and healing.
The first song I attempted to learn on the drums was ‘Fading Like A Flower (Everytime You Leave)’ by Roxette because I have been a Roxette fan since the age of 13 and their easy-listening songs always bring me comfort and joy. Over the years, I have taken formal drum lessons and I eventually convinced myself to try playing drums to an audience.
I’m currently a Chemistry teacher at a local college where we have our annual student rock band competition. The competition culminates in the ‘Teachers Band’ where a group of us teachers come together to play for the college. In a world where drummers are stereotypically male, it makes me quite proud for my students to see a female drummer rocking it on stage.
The song I’ve chosen for HLAG 2023 is a simple one because of nostalgia. It reminds me of why I continue to drum – because of the healing it brings me and the fun that I have just playing my favourite songs.
bravo Angela ! kind drums regards from France to you
GO ANGELA!!!!🤩🥰
I have such a cool aunt 🤩
You’re such an inspiration!! 🙂
Well, well, well: great rhythm and “spot on” with the tune. Your smile at the end says it all. I’m trying to smile more now, too. Music of all kinds, as long as the drummer likes the genre, is healing for all moods to me. Keep at it and I’m sure those kids flipped out when they saw their Chemistry teacher, a female too, drumming away up there! 🙂
Thank you for watching! And thank you for being so encouraging!
Yes, my students were screaming when they saw me seated at the drums when the stage curtains opened. I technically didn’t even need to play anything! It was hilarious!
I hope you keep at your drumming journey too. There have always been ups and downs for us but our love for drumming prevails!
The smile at the end says its all. You love what you do and you are good at it. Keep working to polish your craft. I hope the smile extends to the beginning and all through your performance. #smiles Well done!
GREAT DRUMMING!!!!!!!!!!
Nice Smile at the end!!!! 🙂
