Jazmin Aslı Akalın

Turkey

I started playing the drums at 9, after playing the piano. My parents thought the drums were not a feminine instrument and that my excitement would pass with time but it didn’t – being determined, I made a drumkit with a working kick pedal and practised on that for 2 years, till my parents got me a drumkit. I kept playing non-stop till 18 when I tore my rotator cuff and had surgery. I was getting into jazz by then, but my surgery made me postpone my plans. I still play occasionally whenever I have access to a drum kit. This video was taken post-op 🙂 This track is extremely important to me since it reminds me to keep on going no matter what. Musically, I grew up listening to 70s-80s Turkish pop and jazz.
